Description

A range of over 50 terrain road routes and road areas have been created for research and development purposes.
These range from city centres to motorways, and with many variations of designs incorporating different signage, markings and structures.

Within these areas, a wide range of research ideas were trialled on car simulators prior to either being discounted or built for real.

This work has covered areas such as the original plans for ERA’s (Emergency Refuge Areas), Green motorway lanes just for environmentally friendly vehicles, cycle lane development, varying speed limits, motorway crash panels to reduce views from other lanes, security road blocks, varying lane widths, collapsing gantries, fatigue and distraction tests and many others.

The project work, was done in conjunction with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
